You’d be amazed at the resilience of dogs, especially those in dire situations. Just when you think they have hit rock bottom through no fault of their own, they rise and surprise everyone.
This abandoned pup found at a Michigan adoption center is a shining example!
Left outside in the freezing cold overnight, she was discovered with just a blanket. The rescuers initially thought she was dead, but she began to demonstrate her incredible spirit!
They Thought She Crossed The Rainbow Bridge
Corinne, the director of Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society, was deeply shocked upon arriving at work the next morning. The heartbreaking sight at the front door left her speechless, prompting her to rush to assist the abandoned pup.
“It was found this morning on just a blanket. By its condition, we think it was there most of the night in the cold,” the GPAAS team shared in a Facebook post.
Martin brought the dog inside to examine her condition. “I pulled it inside the building to see what was going on,” he explained to WXYZ Detroit.
The dog was covered in blood and had swollen feet. She suffered from a severe case of mange, leaving her nearly hairless and her skin dry, itchy, and painful. Thankfully, her life was not in imminent danger as initially feared.
She was safely transported to a local Michigan vet hospital for further care, requiring several days of treatment that included medicated baths and antibiotics for her skin condition.
Sharing their story on Facebook, Gritty and her caregivers received an outpouring of support from followers across the nation. However, one thing was still missing – a name for the pup!
The Michigan rescue sought suggestions from their community to name this resilient little survivor, leading to a perfect idea from one commenter!
The Name That Suits Her Perfectly
Everyone, meet Gritty! She was named after the Detroit Lions, known for their grit and determination.
“Gritty…not a very feminine name, but she certainly embodies the spirit of our Detroit Lions…never give up,” commented one follower.
This name perfectly fits her, reflecting the strength that has helped her through the toughest times. Now that she is safe, her unbreakable spirit shines even brighter.
Gritty has made remarkable progress in her recovery. Just a few days after her rescue, she is already feeling much better, and her beautiful fur is beginning to grow back!
For the time being, Gritty will stay with a foster caregiver experienced in caring for special-needs pups.
When she’s ready, she will be available for adoption through the GPAAS rescue. We hope Gritty finds someone who recognizes how special she is and understands that her name is more than just a coincidence!
