Shelter Pup Thought His Family Returned Every Time He Heard a Car

Date:

Every dog dreams of having a loving home filled with affection and care. Sadly, countless dogs lack this basic comfort, many facing the harsh reality of life on the streets or making do in shelters.

Chico, a 10-year-old Chihuahua, had a different but equally tragic story. Born into a loving household, he enjoyed a warm home, but when he needed his family the most, they abandoned him.

Confused and heartbroken, Chico struggled to comprehend why his beloved humans were gone.

The Hope That Sustained Him

For a decade, Chico basked in the love of his family. However, their perspective sadly diverged. He was left at a North Carolina facility for a deeply upsetting reason.

As reported by McClatchy News, they surrendered him claiming “they struggled with potty-training him after ten years.” Yet, the shelter confirmed that “Chico’s kennel was clean upon his arrival.”

Upon reaching the Humane Society of Concord & Greater Cabarrus County in Concord, North Carolina, he was still bewildered and lacked appetite.

What intrigued the shelter staff was his eager reaction to any car that arrived.

“Each time a car would come into our driveway, he would anxiously look for it, hoping it was his family returning,” shared Judy Sims, executive director of the shelter. “We frequently witness this when animals are surrendered.”

This hope for reunion stayed alive in Chico, profoundly moving the staff. It fueled their resolve to help him find a joyful ending swiftly.

At Last, The Car With the Right People

Shortly after, the shelter announced a Facebook post about Chico, showcasing his plight to their followers.

“Chico is a senior gentleman who recently arrived after losing his home of ten years. He quickly bonds with certain individuals and can be vocal with those he doesn’t know. He needs to establish trust to feel secure, which is understandable given his past,” they detailed.

The shelter mentioned his preference for a “low-traffic environment with ample free time and affection.” They also stressed that he needed to be the sole dog in the household, and it would be best if there were no other pets around.

This heartfelt post garnered significant attention, with many sharing Chico’s story. A wave of adoption inquiries flooded the shelter, but none aligned with Chico’s specific needs.

Just when it seemed that Chico might never know the joy of a loving home again, a miracle occurred. A vehicle containing the right people showed up at the shelter and brought him home. He was finally headed toward his rightful place.

After enduring so much, Chico finally found his happy ending, with his new family committed to aiding him through his potty-training journey.
