Volunteer Assesses Dog, Stunned by Her Emotional Breakdown Expressed in Unexpected Ways

Date:

A shelter environment, while calming or endearing, is suboptimal for dogs. The idea of being confined in a small space for part of the day can overwhelm our four-legged companions. They enjoy outings with new volunteers, thrilling playtime, only to return to their confines—depressing, isn’t it?

Mya, a resident at Halifax County Animal Control in Virginia, understands this better than most. After enduring several months in the shelter, this beautiful Hound reached her limit, shocking caregivers with her bold actions.

She Didn’t Expect To See This

Recently, Marissa Emerman, a dedicated volunteer at the Virginia shelter, went viral on social media after posting a video showcasing Mya. During her daily rounds, Marissa noticed an unusual sight—Mya had climbed up on the railing of her crate, seemingly plotting an escape.

Marissa noted that Mya’s daring act was likely a sign of her emotional distress after months of waiting for a forever home. This Hound, while naturally friendly, had developed a new skill—climbing—to counter her boredom.

Mya’s climbing act spoke volumes—a plea for someone to help her find a permanent home. The video gained significant attention, with heartfelt comments flooding in.

“Praying she finds her forever family,” one user wrote, while another commented, “She’s obviously very smart and needs a lot of mental stimulation! I hope she finds a great home that will keep her busy.”

For her safety, Mya has been moved to a covered kennel, but she continues to await the right opportunity. There are many other four-legged friends eagerly waiting for adoption. Marissa, who manages a TikTok account called Shelter Tails, shares videos to highlight these animals. Her hope is for someone to give these deserving furballs the chance they need.

The situation with Mya is not an isolated one. As showcased in Emerman’s videos, countless dogs (and cats) are at risk of emotional distress while waiting for their forever homes. Despite being well cared for and loved, what these animals share is a deep longing for a space where they can thrive, play, and nap comfortably, away from enclosures. Mya and her companions are still hopeful. Could you be the one to give them a chance?
