It’s often said that a community comes together to safeguard its pets – and that’s usually the truth!
The O’ahu family was enjoying a typical Wednesday stroll with their young Pit Bull, Kila. Everything was going smoothly until the curious pup spotted something moving in the distance.
As soon as Kila spotted a chicken, she took off in pursuit, tearing the leash from her owner’s grip. Little did the family know, this playful chase would quickly escalate into a rescue operation lasting several hours!
Unexpected Rescue Mission
As Kila ran for several yards, she dashed into an open storm culvert in Waianae, Hawaii. What started as a leisurely evening walk turned into a distressing situation for her family.
“No one expected that a challenging rescue would take place just four hours later,” wrote the Hawaiian Humane Society on their social media.
When her owners attempted to coax her out, Kila was already too deep inside the culvert and was unaware that it was becoming more confined.
“Kila followed the chicken for several yards, not realizing that the culvert was narrowing the further she went, which led to her getting stuck,” the HHS reported.
Upon discovering that their beloved dog was trapped, her family quickly dialed 9-1-1.
The combined efforts of the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Field Services and Honolulu Fire Department arrived shortly and initiated what became a four-hour rescue operation.
Positive Outcome
Initially, the rescue team aimed to entice Kila out, but they quickly revised their approach. The firefighters recognized that Kila couldn’t navigate through the drain on her own, prompting them to begin digging.
The plan involved digging to reach the pipe and then cutting it to safely extricate Kila. After hours of persistent digging and careful monitoring, the team finally reached her, and their efforts paid off!
The entire mission was documented by HHS and quickly went viral.
“Mahalo to the outstanding crew at Honolulu Fire Department Waiʻanae Fire Station 26 for their unwavering efforts in rescuing Kila,” the HHS team expressed.
Kila’s rescue story captured headlines across the nation, touching the hearts of many who were elated to see this Pittie safe once again.
“A big Mahalo to those with such big hearts! We appreciate your dedication and hard work in saving lives of all kinds,” a commenter wrote.
“Thank you for rescuing Kila! We are grateful for your efforts and commitment to all rescues,” someone else added.
Following this unsettling experience, Kila was brought back to her family without any injuries, a testament to her heroic rescuers’ efforts.
She acted as if nothing traumatic had occurred and instantly began wagging her tail, thrilled to reunite with her owners.
