Just like humans, animals have emotions—and sometimes these feelings can be even more intense. It’s tragic when someone abandons their beloved pet, knowing how much they rely on each other.
A heartbreaking scene unfolded when a woman walking through the Bronx, New York, noticed a small head peeking out of a bag hanging from a container.
Heartlessly Left Like Trash
As she approached the bag, she discovered a small ferret whose head was peeking out, prompting her to take action and contact Small n Furry Rescue.
“I saw the email and my heart dropped,” a representative from Small n Furry Rescue shared in an interview with The Dodo. Upon arriving, the rescuer quickly assessed the situation to transport the ferret to safety.
“I’m working on getting the ferret transported to the rescue. Once I have him safe, he will be evaluated by a veterinarian. Provided he doesn’t need to be held as evidence (the finder will report the abandonment to NYC animal control), the ferret will be looking for a new home after being cleared by a vet,” she posted on her official Facebook profile.
Due to the legalities surrounding ferret ownership in New York City, the rescuer acted swiftly. Finally, Trash Panda, as she named the sweet ferret, was in safe hands, eagerly awaiting her veterinary examination. “Despite being discarded like trash, this little ferret seems to be in great spirits, appearing quite young with no visible injuries,” she shared on Facebook.
Subsequently, updates indicated awareness that Trash Panda is approximately 6 to 8 months old and identifiable as a Marshall’s ferret, further confirming her amiable nature. However, once the vet’s report came, it revealed some health concerns. Trash Panda’s heart rate was abnormally fast at over 300 beats per minute, which could be attributed to shock, given her ordeal. Additionally, initial blood tests showed anemia and low platelets, necessitating medication for recovery.
Against all odds, this resilient ferret maintained a spirited demeanor, enchanting one of the clinic nurses so much that she considered adopting her once she recovered.
Over the next few days, her health improved steadily, displaying more energy and playfulness, showing signs of recovery towards her adoption potential.
Waiting For The Happy Ending
On November 23, while sharing Thanksgiving wishes, Trash Panda’s rescuer also shared joyous updates on her official Facebook profile: “Trash Panda, the baby ferret that was found tied to a dumpster in the Bronx, is doing fantastic! She is continuing to gain weight, her symptoms are improving, and her true playful personality is starting to show!”
Importantly, this little ferret has already secured a forever home with two other ferrets waiting for her recovery. Trash Panda eagerly awaits the moment she can join her new family. Ferrets are known to be social butterflies, and soon she will undoubtedly thrive in her loving environment.
