I believe that if dogs could speak, they’d express their greatest aspiration to be part of a warm and loving family. Every dog I know thrives on the affection and activities we humans offer, from cuddles to tasty treats. It’s no surprise that they long to be around us constantly. Sadly, not every pup is fortunate enough to enjoy this kind of life; many are left to wander cold streets or languish in crowded shelters, yearning for someone to notice them.
Tucker is one such dog.
I Just Want To Be Loved
This charming eight-year-old dog has spent the majority of his life in a shelter. After a brief period with a family in 2018, he was returned to his original shelter, which profoundly affected Tucker, causing him to withdraw and wait for the days to pass. Fortunately, the caring staff at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter stepped up to care for this sweet boy.
Given Tucker’s friendly disposition, the shelter staff hoped to find him a perfect family. However, due to certain restrictions, such as needing a home without children or other pets, they knew the search could be lengthy. Little did they know it would take a staggering seven years!
It Finally Happened!
As 2024 rolled around, Tucker marked six long years at the shelter. Finally, he was adopted! Witnessing his joy as he stepped out of his kennel brought everyone to tears of happiness, and the staff was overjoyed for him.
Sadly, after just 10 months, Tucker was returned. “He experienced a lot of freedom and tranquility. It was disheartening for us at the shelter to see him come back, as he seemed so happy in a home,” stated Ashley Behrens, acting director of the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.
Looking For A Home
Although the staff loves seeing him daily, his return to the kennel leaves them heartbroken. “It’s devastating. He has come such a long way since his arrival; he’s quite an easy dog,” Behrens shared. To uplift his spirits, Julia and Deanna took him out for a picnic in the park, which brought a touch of family life into Tucker’s day.

This lovable boy promises to make every day feel like an adventure—despite his eight years of age. “He simply wants to enjoy his golden years in peace and comfort, and we wholeheartedly want that for him, too,” concluded Behrens.
