When Ryder was discovered by the rescuers in California, associated with Dogwood Animal Rescue, he was in absolutely dire condition.
His appearance left them stunned, and they quickly understood that he would require significant medical attention to have a fighting chance.
Acting swiftly, they transported him to their facility to provide the necessary care.
He Will Survive
Upon Ryder’s arrival at the shelter in California, it was evident to everyone just how severely malnourished he had become.
Treatment commenced immediately, but it was clear that recovery would be a slow process, especially when Ryder began to vomit or show blood after eating.
The road to recovery was not going to be straightforward. His rescuers feared more serious complications like aspiration pneumonia, but their hands were tied.
Unfortunately, Ryder’s body was unable to handle the medications prescribed. The team resorted to administering injections as it was their only option at that time.
Skin treatments were also provided for his mange condition, leaving the staff with the only task of waiting to see if the treatments worked.
As time progressed, the team noticed that Ryder’s condition improved significantly in just a brief period. Everyone was astounded by the changes.
Ryder’s Challenge
Ryder’s fur was noticeably improving, and he was looking much healthier. His rescuers began allowing him to socialize and engage in playtime with other dogs at the shelter.
Despite Ryder’s remarkable recovery, subsequent veterinary evaluations presented another challenge.
He was diagnosed with Megaesophagus, a condition resulting in an enlarged esophagus that complicated his ability to eat efficiently.
This condition prevented proper food transport, which clarified the vomiting and could explain why his body struggled with standard medications.
Fortunately, the prognosis was not grim. There were still strategies they could implement to help him lead a relatively normal life.
An Ingenious Solution
Rocky Kanaka, a dedicated dog rescuer, had previously fostered a dog with the same condition as Ryder. They discovered an effective treatment method, which brought hope for Ryder.
The solution was straightforward: they provided him with food that had a “smoothie-like consistency” and ensured he consumed it while seated in a specially-designed chair.
This approach utilized gravity to aid the esophagus in its function and significantly reduced the risk of future complications.
This innovative solution was a success, and Ryder’s rescue team eagerly adopted this treatment plan.
Ryder underwent an incredible transformation during his time at the shelter, and all involved are immensely proud of him.
