No shelter puppy should have to call a kennel their home, missing out on the beauty of life outside its walls. Sadly, Deuce, a one-and-a-half-year-old pup, faced this reality when his owner abandoned him. The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) in Palm City, Florida, gave Deuce the love he desperately needed.
Even though the caring staff and volunteers did everything possible to make his stay as comfortable as they could, Deuce longed for a loving forever home, knowing that his happiness could only be complete with a family of his own.
Deuce’s Disappointment
In November 2024, just two months after entering the shelter, Deuce received wonderful news: he was adopted! With a heart full of hope, he bid farewell to his shelter friends, ready to embrace the new life he had always dreamed of. However, after a month in his new home, Deuce’s happiness was short-lived as he was surrendered due to his owner’s declining health.
Back at the Florida shelter, Deuce greeted familiar faces with enthusiasm, playfully jumping on desks. Yet, upon realizing he was back in the kennel, he felt that familiar sting of rejection.
While waiting in his kennel, Deuce would patiently stretch out his paw on the cage whenever potential adopters walked by, hoping to catch their attention and earn another chance.
“Deuce almost always has his paws up on the cage. He is always tracking people with his eyes, eager to get any small amount of attention,” Sarah Fisher, HSTC communications manager, shared with The Dodo.
Asking For A Chance To Be Happy
Each time he sees people walk by, his hope dims further into disappointment. While calm and sweet in his kennel, Deuce’s energy bursts forth when taken for walks. Unfortunately, potential adopters are often unwilling to invest the time needed for his training, causing him to be overlooked.
The staff at HSTC ensures that Deuce enjoys multiple walks throughout the day, engages in agility training, and relishes his off-leash playtime in the yard. With a wealth of love to offer, he only needs a patient family to give him the love he deserves.
Deuce continues to exhibit a strong willingness to train, making notable progress each day. “Our lead trainer, Heidi Fischer, notes that he would thrive in a home that offers regular exercise and leash training. He engages well with treats and shows high trainability,” Fisher mentioned. As Deuce remains hopeful for his freedom, he eagerly awaits the day when someone will recognize him as the wonderful dog he truly is.
