When a Good Samaritan found a terrified pup curled up behind a dumpster in an alley in St. Louis, Missouri, they called Stray Rescue of St. Louis for assistance. Donna Lochmann and her team promptly arrived at the scene, where they discovered the dog, later named Joan of Bark, trying to hide from the world, quiet and seemingly resigned to her fate. Upon hearing Lochmann’s voice, Joan looked at her with eyes that conveyed sorrow and overwhelming fear.
Bringing Her To Safety

Lochmann sat beside Joan of Bark, enticing her with Vienna sausages. Although hesitant initially, the hungry pup quickly devoured the meal. After spending some time with her, Lochmann placed a leash around her neck. Seeing the frightened canine hesitate, she patiently waited until Joan finally stood up. It became apparent why she was so scared—one of her back legs was broken, likely from being hit by a car.

Once they lured Joan of Bark into a crate, the rescuers assured her that she was safe now.
“She’s fearful and painful, but who wouldn’t be in her position. It’s ok baby, you are safe now! We got you,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared in a Facebook post.
They rushed her to the clinic, where the vet examined her and took X-rays of her back leg.
The compassionate veterinary staff gave Joan of Bark a soothing bath, and she responded with gratitude in her eyes. Despite the vet team’s best efforts to save her leg, it unfortunately had to be amputated due to the extent of the injury. After a successful surgery, the brave pup began her recovery journey.
Receiving A Lot Of Love

After healing, Joan of Bark transitioned to a shelter, finally free of pain. Her rescuers showered her with love, making her feel cherished and safe. Joan savored every moment with her heroes, relishing the cuddles and affection. Their kindness restored her hope of one day finding her forever humans who would love her unconditionally. Despite becoming a tripod, she lived life to the fullest, enjoying lively zoomies in the yard.
The St. Louis rescue placed Joan of Bark into a wonderful foster home. Though timid at first, she quickly adapted and was treated affectionately by her foster family, forming a bond with her furry foster sister. Eager for a permanent home, Joan began searching for her forever family. Though it remains unclear if her biggest wish has yet been granted, it’s undeniable that this lovely pup deserves the unconditional love that only devoted parents can provide.
