A sweet dog roamed the streets, confused and uncertain about whom to ask for help. Fortunately, rescuers found him, later named Hashbrown, noticing his disorientation. The dog was then taken to the Maui Humane Society, where the staff welcomed him with open arms. Upon discovering the cause of his confusion, the shelter staff was surprised.
Hashbrown Adjusts To Shelter Life
The staff quickly realized that Hashbrown was completely blind with no known past—no microchip or collar. He was taken to the vet for an examination, which confirmed he had been born blind. His shelter friends speculated that he had been abandoned, left to wander the streets unaware.
Despite his inability to see, Hashbrown could feel the love and care from his wonderful caregivers. He showed his sweet nature by befriending every dog he met and enjoying the company of people. Determined to live a full life, he thrived in the shelter environment.
With the shelter being overcrowded and adoption rates low, the staff started searching for other shelters willing to take in Hashbrown, fearing he might struggle to find his forever home. “They all love him and they knew he deserved a loving home, but a special needs dog doesn’t stand a chance at a facility struggling with adoption numbers,” said Kendall Schulz, adoption services director at Helen Woodward Animal Center, to The Dodo.
Recognizing the urgency, Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego stepped in to assist, taking Hashbrown into their care with a commitment to find him a forever home.
Hoping To Start A New Chapter

Shortly thereafter, Hashbrown was transferred to the San Diego rescue and placed in a loving foster home where he received plenty of affection, feeling grateful for their kindness. He formed bonds with the family and demonstrated his affectionate nature.
Despite enjoying his time with the fosters, Hashbrown dreams of finding his forever family. “We are so grateful to get this opportunity to find him the family he deserves. Dogs amaze us time and time again; they remind us how to live. If you want to see resilience and kindness, come meet Hashbrown,” Schulz emphasized.
Hashbrown would thrive best in a one-story home with a family willing to make slight adjustments to help facilitate his comfortable living. His story is one of resilience; despite being abandoned and left to wander in darkness, his heart remains full of love, waiting for someone to believe in him and provide the nurturing home he yearns for.
