California Couple Adopts Scared Puppy and Deaf Cat, and What Follows Will Surprise You

Date:

It’s often believed that dogs and cats are natural enemies, with many considering them to be opposites. However, I believe that’s a misconception, often stated by those who haven’t experienced having both a dog and a cat at the same time. In fact, when given the opportunity, a puppy and a kitten can form an extraordinary bond that surprises everyone.

To illustrate this point, let’s explore the friendship of Bernie and Joey, two animals whose contrasting natures became a beautiful partnership thanks to their mom’s love.

A Beautiful Friendship

When Joey was first adopted by her mom, Wendy, she was a rescue dog with a troubled past. Very skittish and distrustful of people, she had suffered from terrible mange and emotional abuse, having rocks thrown at her as a mere puppy. Thankfully, she was rescued and taken to a shelter where she received the care she needed until Wendy came along, offering her a forever home.

Wendy shared with GeoBeats Animals: “Bernie was rescued from San Francisco Animal Care and Control. I’d never had a cat before, and I just kind of took Joey to meet the kitty.” To Wendy’s surprise, the two became friends right away, forming a bond that made them inseparable.

Wendy was even more surprised to discover that Bernie was deaf, but was astonished to see how Joey instinctively understood her needs. He became extremely protective of Bernie, highlighting the depth of their unique bond. It was heartwarming to witness their connection.

Wendy Is So Happy For Them

Wendy has stated: “When we are out on the bicycle or walking, Joey is very protective of Bernie. If there are any dogs nearby, he senses it and keeps Bernie safe.” Though they’ve shifted from more playful days to simply lounging on the couch together, Wendy finds joy in their happiness. Given what Joey endured previously, it’s both heartbreaking and inspiring to witness his transformation, which has been made possible by the love and care from Wendy and Bernie.

Despite her own challenges, including her deafness and a difficult past, Bernie proves to be an exceptional companion for Joey. Wendy notes: “It’s a totally different relationship that they have compared to mine with Joey. Joey acts as Bernie’s big sister and protects her fiercely.” Witnessing their progress since adoption fills me with joy, knowing that both deserved a second chance, which Wendy graciously provided.
