California Family Loses Home in Fire and Must Surrender Their Dog with Neurological Challenges

Date:

Los Angeles’ devastating wildfire has created a profound loss in our community. Numerous families lost their homes, their loved ones, and even pets, our cherished companions, were left without places they once knew as home. Manzanita, a tiny puppy with neurological issues, is one poignant example. After beginning a journey with her second adoptive family, she was surrendered to a California shelter as her family felt it was in her best interest.

The home that Manzanita once knew has vanished, leaving her with only a haze of memories. Upon arriving at Pasadena Humane, Manzanita’s family faced the heart-wrenching decision to say one last goodbye. Rather than focus on caring for her, they needed to prioritize rebuilding their lives which had crumbled in a matter of hours. It was a difficult choice, but as stated in CUDDLY’s post, it was their only option to enable them to focus on reconstructing their lives.

Regrettably, Manzanita faced additional challenges; her neurological difficulties required immediate veterinary attention, prompting her caregivers to launch a fundraiser via CUDDLY. Initial examinations provided no answers, but vets believed her condition stemmed from a virus she was exposed to in-utero. Fortunately, it was determined that her neurological problems were not permanent.

Eventually, Manzanita was transferred to Love Leo Rescue, where a dedicated team was eager to assist her. They secured a lovely foster home for her, and she started to show encouraging signs of improvement. Manzanita blossomed, displaying her affectionate nature and love for people and other dogs, marking her as an excellent candidate for adoption.

“She is a perfectly happy, well-adjusted, and lovely little puppy, who deserves to live a good life. She loves other dogs and enjoys sitting next to her human,” Love Leo Rescue expressed on Facebook.

Unbeknownst to her, a miraculous turn of events was just around the corner…

On February 10th, 2025, Love Leo Rescue shared an incredible update: Manzanita had found her forever home. Miraculously, her story resonated with many, including her first family living on the opposite coast, who reached out to meet her.

Soon after their reunion with Manzanita, it was clear—she was meant to stay! “They were in town and wanted to meet her. Long story short, it was a love connection. They flew back two weeks later to pick her up, and she is now safe at home, greatly loved. No more bouncing from shelter to shelter or being surrendered due to her unique circumstances,” LLR shared.

After enduring such heartache in her recent past, Manzanita is finally where she belongs. We can only hope this is the beginning of a joyful and stable life for her!
