Seamus, a severely emaciated and injured dog, was found barely clinging to life on the streets and admitted to Manhattan Animal Care & Control in New York City, weighing just 22 pounds—half of his ideal weight of 45 pounds. The staff at North Shore Animal League America, a rescue organization in Port Washington, New York, immediately stepped in to provide life-saving medical care and much-needed support.
Seamus Receives Help
Upon first meeting Seamus, Deana Merino, medical director of North Shore Animal League, was shocked and heartbroken. He had no strength left in his thin body, covered in open wounds and lesions. “When I first saw him, it was heartbreaking. He could barely move. It was so sad. I was feeling angry and upset. How can people do this to a dog like him?” she shared with PEOPLE.
Dr. Gerard Laheney, D.V.M., a supervising veterinarian at the organization, examined Seamus and was equally shocked by his condition, having never seen anything like it in his two decades at the shelter. Bloodwork revealed that Seamus was anemic, and with no underlying medical issues, Dr. Laheney concluded that Seamus had been starved and abandoned. Despite the abuse he suffered, Seamus proved to be a sweetheart right from the start, curling up in the comfy bed provided for him.
His new friends showered him with affection while he absorbed the kindness, even managing to wag his tail to show appreciation.
The Pup Starts Recovering
Captivated by Seamus’ sweet personality, Merino decided to foster him at home, eager to help him regain his strength. “With my medical background, I can help him gain weight, feed him well, and provide the love and care he deserves,” she mentioned. She ensured that the pup received a high-protein, well-balanced diet, which led to Seamus steadily recovering and gaining weight, eventually overcoming his anemia.
Once he regains his strength, Seamus will undergo neuter surgery and be ready for adoption. Although still weak, he has already shown interest in running alongside Merino’s dogs.
Seamus looks forward to thriving in full health and enjoying all the joys of life. Merino believes that the pup will make an incredible pet for his future family, as he loves snuggling and being close to those he cherishes. Seamus’ resilience and spirit serve as a remarkable inspiration, and there is no doubt he will find the love and happiness he has always dreamed of.
