On a chilly afternoon in Albany, New York, a Good Samaritan noticed something unusual near a filthy garbage can: a zipped-up duffel bag with two eyes peering out.
Unfortunate Case
Upon closer inspection, they discovered a small brown and black tiger cat inside the bag. The Good Samaritan quickly contacted animal control, which safely transported the cat to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS), the oldest and largest animal protection organization in New York.
The cat, named Newt, was warmly welcomed by Kara Murry, the MHHS intake coordinator. Kara was astonished by how sweet and manageable Newt was. “I remember saying, ‘How could anyone throw you in the trash? You’re so sweet and cuddly!’” she recounted, noting how Newt purred and rubbed against everyone, almost as if expressing gratitude for being rescued.
New Chance
Newt’s immediate needs included a thorough medical checkup along with food and water. Within her initial hours at the humane society, this charming cat effortlessly won over the hearts of staff members.
“She came right up to me for pets and love the first time I met her, two days after her arrival. [She] was very sweet, craved cuddles, and loved playing with pipe cleaners,” Heather Ellis, a Mohawk Hudson veterinary assistant, shared with The Dodo.
Due to her endearing personality, Newt’s stay at the humane society was brief, as she found a warm and loving forever home with a man seeking companionship. It was truly love at first sight.
Forever Home
Thanks to her kind new dad who recognized her value, Newt no longer has to fear being abandoned again. “As they say, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. This sweet girl is a truly wonderful treasure for her new dad,” said Marguerite Pearson, director of marketing and communications at Mohawk Hudson.
