It’s increasingly common to encounter stray or abandoned dogs on the streets, sadly reflecting a growing issue. While there are cases where individuals can no longer afford to care for their pets and choose to bring them to shelters for better opportunities, many others do not treat their pets with the same compassion, often subjecting them to hardship before simply leaving them behind.
What’s In The Bag

On a routine workday at the Oklahoma Humane Society, Scott Lockard noticed a black bag tied to the door handle. Upon checking it, he discovered a small brown dog inside. This wasn’t a first for Scott—he shared with The Dodo:
This wasn’t the first time I have arrived at the adoption center to find animals waiting there, so I can’t say I was super surprised. I was happy to get her in and fed and watered, so I was mostly just thinking about getting the little dog comfortable.
After welcoming the dog into the shelter, Scott noted she was a bit shy and reserved, yet otherwise in good health. He searched the bag for any information left by the previous owner and found a note indicating her name: Her name is Maris, find her a good home. This note, while seemingly heartfelt, reflects the sad reality that the person who abandoned her had good intentions, wanting to ensure her safety.
A Growing Problem

The humane society is addressing the issue of abandoned pets by sharing Maris’s story alongside her photo. Marketing manager Roshelle Anderson stated to The Dodo: We didn’t post the photo to specifically call out the people who left the pet, but rather, to bring attention to a greater problem facing our community. Currently, the center is facing a significant challenge with increasing numbers of abandoned dogs coupled with low adoption rates, straining their resources and ability to house these animals.
The center appeals to the community, urging anyone who can to adopt a dog and provide them with a loving home.

As for Maris, she remains at the shelter waiting for someone special to adopt her. Given her sweet nature, there is hope that a loving family will soon welcome her into their home.
