Rescue Team in California Discovers Starving Mother Dog and Her 10 Puppies Abandoned in the Desert

Date:

Throughout my experience with dogs, I’ve observed cases where stray pups retreat to remote areas to escape human contact, often due to neglect or abuse, believing isolation is their best option. While this is a common scenario, it is unusual to find a dog in such circumstances that has not suffered abuse; most often, they become isolated after being abandoned. A notable exception was a mama dog found in a California desert by compassionate individuals who intervened.

How Did She Get Here?!

A group of friends documenting a video in the desert was taken by surprise when they spotted a dog wandering nearby. With no apparent source of this stray in the middle of nowhere, they were uncertain how to proceed. However, approaching her revealed an outgoing and affectionate nature, suggesting she wasn’t just an ordinary stray. Yet, uncertainty lingered regarding her past—whether she was truly abandoned or simply lost.

Then, faint cries led them to suspect she had given birth, prompting urgent action.

The group promptly reached out to Atlas Animal Rescue, and Emily Everett-Nelson quickly responded. Upon arrival, she discovered the mama dog behind an old ramp alongside her ten recently born puppies, all in need of assistance. The dog allowed Emily to place her puppies into a kennel safely, and soon, they were all in the car together.

However, it became apparent that Pretzel, the mama dog, was malnourished and struggling to care for her young, but she now had a chance to recover and care for her puppies.

The Entire Family Is Doing Well

Emily had a friend with another mama dog named Louise, who had also given birth to ten puppies. Consequently, Emily arranged for both families to live together in a lovely home. After receiving eight weeks of care, the whole family was finally ready for adoption, with increasing hope for their futures. Remarkably, while all the puppies found homes quickly, Pretzel received the most applications and has successfully found her forever home.

Thanks to the kindness of those strangers and the dedicated rescuers, this large family now enjoys wonderful lives with their new families, and that is truly heartwarming.
