Each day, we are inundated with alerts from various organizations about the increasing endangerment of animals and the overcrowding of shelters. Yet, despite these warnings, heartless individuals continue to commit terrible acts against pets, with abandonment being particularly tragic. This cruel reality escalates further, as demonstrated by those who breed dogs purely for profit. When monetary gain overshadows genuine love and care for these creatures, the outcomes can be devastating.
Poor Little Lives

Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge (RBARI), a rescue organization in Oakland, New Jersey, recently reported a distressing situation in their Facebook post. They reported, “!! Urgent Rescue in Progress ‼️ Sick puppies dumped outside Paterson shelter!” The tiny pups were discovered in dire condition—cold, sick, and malnourished. They were believed to be some type of micro breed of Boston terrier, around eight weeks old and all male. Unfortunately, their mother was nowhere to be found, and no information was available on her or any other siblings.
The rescuers acted promptly, taking them to the hospital for essential care. Later that day, RBARI updated their followers with a positive development in their Facebook post, stating, “The three tiny micro-Boston pups abandoned outside in the cold are now stable and receiving the medical care that had been so neglected.” The rescues were affectionately named Alvin, Simon, and Theodore. Despite their malnourishment and pot bellies, they were also struggling with an upper respiratory illness, a result of neglect due to microbreeding. It was evident that their condition led to their abandonment, as sick puppies cannot be sold in the thriving world of backyard breeding.
However, this only fueled RBARI’s resolve to provide them with a better future. They administered the necessary medications and offered quality food, which significantly improved their condition. Soon, the pups were placed into outpatient care in a medical foster home, surrounded by love and essential care to support their recovery. “Alvin, Simon and Theodore are finally being doted on as precious lives instead of a rejected commodity,” RBARI proudly remarked.
An Eye-Opening Tragedy
Although the puppies faced a challenging recovery, the dedication from their caregivers provided hope for a happy ending. RBARI shared, “All three pups are spunky, running around, wrestling and playing hide and seek one minute – then snuggling and giving love the next,” in a hopeful Facebook post. However, tragedy struck when they later announced the heartbreaking news: one of the puppies, Alvin, passed away. In their Facebook post, they revealed that Alvin arrived with multiple severe health issues, including a cleft palate, congenital hydrocephalus, and other neurological defects linked to poor breeding practices. Tragically, all these factors contributed to his untimely demise.
The caregivers, although devastated, made the tough decision to share Alvin’s story—not to wallow in sorrow but to raise awareness and prevent similar fates for other puppies. Their message resonates: it’s time for all of us to consider whether it’s worth sacrificing the well-being of these innocent lives for a few extra dollars.
