As the couple hiked through the California woods, little did they know an adorable surprise awaited them. Hearing a strange noise from the creek, they decided to investigate, only to discover a mama dog giving birth to a litter of cute puppies.
A Loving Foster Home
The hikers quickly took the mama dog, Ruby, and her puppies to a local shelter. Eight days later, Hopalong Animal Rescue, a non-profit based in Oakland, California, welcomed them. They contacted Thom McCallum, a foster parent of the rescue, requesting that he care for Ruby and her puppies—Jax, Tito, and Kirby.
Upon arrival at McCallum’s home in Berkeley, it was evident Ruby was timid and exhausted. He worked hard to create a safe environment for her and the puppies. Ruby, focused on her little ones, felt relief seeing them bask in the warmth of a home.
He made every effort to ensure Ruby felt secure. As Ruby observed how devoted McCallum was, she gradually let her guard down. It warmed his heart to see her begin to trust him. McCallum expressed his joy on Instagram, saying, “Ruby is finally asleep in my lap, and my heart is so full. The end of such a lovely day I didn’t expect.”
Three weeks later, the puppies were lively and ready to explore. They brought joy into McCallum’s life, showering him with affection as they licked his face. McCallum had a wonderful time with Ruby and her pups, taking them on walks in a wagon. Their happiest moments were spent playing outside.
Ruby And Her Pups Get Their Happy Ending
As time went by, Ruby became deeply attached to McCallum, yearning for his presence at all times. They formed a bond that could not be broken. McCallum realized that he could not part with Ruby.
“She loves it here. I love being with her, and I think I’m the best home for her.”
When Ruby’s puppies were ready for adoption, all three found loving homes in California. Tito’s new family lives next door, allowing him to still spend time with Ruby. McCallum continues to foster with Hopalong Animal Rescue, with Ruby often helping him care for other fur babies.
It’s heartwarming to see Ruby and her puppies with caring families, surrounded by love and safety.
