It’s no secret that animal shelters in the United States face numerous challenges. Each year, approximately 6.3 million animals enter these shelters, according to Forbes. Sadly, only 4.1 million find homes, leaving many to spend their days in kennels, pondering why they remain unwanted.
A tiny family left by the roadside pondered why their owner callously abandoned them, disregarding their well-being. Fortunately, they were rescued by the dedicated team at Three Little Pitties Rescue in Texas. The founder, Melissa Fears, described the scene: “It was heartbreaking. They were crammed into a tiny, filthy kennel left on a sidewalk. Persephone was tied to the kennel by a leash, unable to help her babies,” she recounted in an interview.
Everything Will Be Just Fine
Tragically, the pups spent several days in dire circumstances, as observers walked by without offering help. While one passerby did attempt to open their cage, it wasn’t until a Good Samaritan called the shelter that they received assistance.
Though no one could explain their abandonment, Fears speculated, “Our best guess is that Persephone’s owner didn’t spay her. When she had puppies, it was too much for them to handle. Sadly, this isn’t unusual. Pregnant or nursing dogs are often abandoned on the streets here when their owners feel overwhelmed.” As soon as the shelter staff took the family in, they contacted Alexis, asking if she could foster them.
Without hesitation, she welcomed them into her home to begin their new journey.
At The Fosters
The pups, found in poor condition, were quite sick, with one in critical condition. “The sickest puppy couldn’t even stand; her body temperature was around 90°F, while normal is 101-102°F; her gums, ears, and belly were almost white. We were uncertain if she’d survive that first night,” Fears recalled, noting the puppy was so fragile that even gentle touches caused her to whimper.
Fortunately, one puppy was healthier than the rest, bringing relief to the rescuers as they hoped her siblings would soon follow. After a challenging recovery, each pup made a remarkable comeback, assuring everyone that this family would enjoy a happy and healthy life. Now, their only need is a loving forever home.
“The puppies would be perfect for an active family or someone who can keep up with their playful energy. They’ll require patience, love, and a little training to help them grow into the best dogs they can be,” said Fears. Regarding their mother, she believes she would thrive in a home with another male dog, as she is extremely well-behaved and fiercely loyal.
