Adopted from a California Shelter, a Fearful Dog and a Deaf Cat Share an Unbelievable Bond

Date:

It is often said that dogs and cats are natural enemies. Many people view them as complete opposites.

However, I believe that’s a misconception. Typically, this notion comes from individuals who have never owned both a cat and a dog simultaneously.

With the right environment, a puppy and a kitten can forge an incredible friendship, often surprising everyone.

To illustrate this point, let’s discuss the story of Bernie and Joey, two seemingly opposite animals that became friends when their owner decided to adopt them both.

A Beautiful Friendship

Upon adopting Joey, his owner, Wendy, found herself with a rescue dog who had a troubled past. Joey was quite timid and found it hard to trust people.

She had severe mange and was nearly bald. During her formative months, she was subjected to mistreatment, including being pelted with rocks by cruel individuals.

Rescued by compassionate individuals, she was given a fresh start at a shelter, but still yearned for a loving forever home, which Wendy provided.

Wendy shared with GeoBeats Animals: “Bernie was rescued from San Francisco Animal Care and Control. I had never owned a cat before, and I thought it would be nice for Joey to meet her.

To her delight, the two hit it off right away. They quickly became bonded and started spending all their time together.

Shortly after, Wendy learned that Bernie was deaf, which surprised her. She was even more amazed to discover that Joey intuitively understood this.

He instinctively recognized that she required support, which made their connection even more remarkable. He became fiercely protective of his new friend, and it was heartwarming to witness.

Wendy Is So Happy For Them

Wendy mentioned, “When we go biking or take walks, Joey is very protective of Bernie. If there are any dogs around, he senses them and keeps Bernie safe.

She observed that while they used to engage in playful antics, now they prefer relaxing together on the couch and napping.

Wendy is incredibly thankful that her two furry friends are so content alongside her. It’s heartbreaking to think about Joey’s past.

Yet, it’s uplifting to acknowledge that he has been able to overcome his traumas and transform completely. He has become a whole new dog, thanks to Wendy and Bernie.

And then there’s Bernie, who, despite her own background and struggles with deafness, serves as an extraordinary friend to Joey.

Wendy expressed, “They have a completely different bond compared to mine with Joey. Joey acts like her big sister and will protect her at any cost.

It is truly heartwarming to witness the growth both of them have experienced since their adoption. Both deserved a second chance, and Wendy made that happen. I am thrilled for them.
