Lily’s eyes mirrored the profound sadness she experienced on the day she arrived at Chicago Animal Care and Control. The shy pup was bewildered by the chaotic shelter environment, having spent her early life with a backyard breeder and never knowing the warmth of a loving home. The staff felt heartbroken for her and hoped for a brighter future.
Lily Meets Her Savior
Fortunately, Malinois and Dutch Shepherd Rescue (M.A.D) learned about Lily’s plight and felt motivated to rescue her. They reached out on Facebook to find a foster for Lily, and that very day, Katie Markovic stumbled upon their post. The sight of the terrified puppy tugged at her heartstrings, and as a devoted dog owner and fan of the Malinois breed, she knew she had to step in. She rushed to the shelter, brought Lily home to Chicago, and on her first day, the timid pup kept her tail tucked, feeling insecure in her new surroundings.
Markovic took Lily to the vet, where she received a clean bill of health. The puppy’s loving nature began to show as she met Markovic’s children, melting their hearts with gentle kisses. Quickly adjusting to her new family, Lily befriended the family’s Belgian Malinois, Hera, who patiently helped her learn how to be a dog. The entire family fell for Lily and cherished their time together.

Katie shared Lily’s journey on TikTok to inspire others to foster shelter dogs and help them gain confidence. Calling her decision to foster Lily the best choice of 2025, she hopes to continue fostering in the future. Lily’s touching story captured the hearts of many, leading an amazing family from Dickson, Tennessee, to adopt her.
Although it was difficult for the Markovic family to bid farewell, they understood that the adopting family already had two dogs, making it impossible for them to keep Lily. Nevertheless, Lily’s journey underscores the importance of fostering. With the love and care from her fosters, she overcame her fears, blossoming into a confident and joyful companion.
