As Hurricane Milton drew closer to Tampa, Florida, a community united in preparation for the impending disaster.
Yet, when the order to evacuate was given, many residents grabbed their important belongings and hit the road. Sadly, not everyone could escape in time.
Amid the chaos, a little white bull terrier mix stood by the roadside, observing the frantic traffic. Heartbreakingly, he was unable to move for a tragic reason.
The Most Courageous Rescue

While the Florida Highway Patrol ensured the safety of the area, one officer spotted a small head peeking through the tall grass. Realizing it was a dog, he called out, hoping the little pup would come to him.
When the dog remained still, the officer grew concerned. As he approached, he discovered the pup was tied to the fence!

Upon getting closer, the troopers noticed the pup’s paws were already submerged in the rising water. Acting quickly, they resolved to rescue the frightened dog immediately. However, this would prove to be more complicated than anticipated.
Having been abandoned and now surrounded by floodwaters, the pup expressed distrust towards the officers. He growled and barked, warding them off.
Yet, the committed trooper was determined not to abandon him and came up with a strategy to assist.
A Safe Haven
Understanding this pup just needed some kindness, the officer spoke softly and reassuringly to him.

“It’s okay. I understand,” the trooper reassured the growling dog.
Stepping bravely into the floodwaters, now nearly at the dog’s neck, he managed to untie him from the fence. Subsequently, he placed the pup into his patrol car and rushed him to the veterinarian for urgent care.
“The dog rescued by [FHP Tampa] is now safe and receiving medical attention. Troopers brought him to a vet, where he was examined and received a clean bill of health,” Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) reported on X.

Fortunately, he was declared healthy and placed on the adoption list right away. As the trooper continued his work assisting residents, the Florida Highway Patrol stressed that pets must never be left behind.
“Remember to take care of your pets when evacuating. For information on pet-friendly lodging during Hurricane Milton, visit the [Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s website],” FLHSMV shared on X.
