Resilient Pup Abandoned at Shelter Now Proudly Named After Michigan’s Tough NFL Team

Date:

You’d be surprised by the resilience of some dogs, especially those in need. Just when you think they have hit rock bottom through no fault of their own, they begin to rise and defy all expectations. This abandoned pup found at the door of a Michigan adoption center is a shining example!

Left in the freezing cold with only a blanket, rescuers initially thought she was deceased until she revealed her remarkable spirit.

They Thought She Crossed The Rainbow Bridge

Corinne, the director of Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society, was shocked when she arrived at work the next morning. The heartbreaking sight at the front door left her speechless, and she rushed to help the abandoned pup. “It was found this morning on just a blanket. By its condition, we think it was there most of the night in the cold,” GPAAS shared in a Facebook post.

Martin took the dog inside to assess her condition. “I pulled it inside the building, so I could see what was going on,” Martin told WXYZ Detroit.

The dog was covered in blood, with swollen feet and suffering from a severe case of mange, leaving her almost hairless with dry, itchy, and painful skin. Fortunately, her life was not in danger as initially thought, and she was safely taken to a local vet for treatment. This included several days of medicated baths and antibiotics, as her skin was in terrible condition.

After sharing her story on Facebook, the dog and her caregivers received support from followers across the nation. However, one thing was missing: a name. The Michigan rescue sought suggestions from their friends and followers, and one commenter hit the nail on the head!

The Name That Suits Her Perfectly

Introducing Gritty, named in honor of Michigan’s NFL team, the Detroit Lions, known for their grit!

“Gritty… not a very feminine name, but she certainly embodies the spirit of our Detroit Lions… never give up,” the commenter wrote.

This name could not be more fitting; Gritty truly embodies resilience, and her unbreakable spirit continues to shine even brighter now that she’s in a safe environment.

Gritty’s recovery has exceeded expectations; within just a few days, she has begun to feel considerably better, and her beautiful fur is starting to grow back!

For now, Gritty will stay with her experienced foster who specializes in caring for special-needs pups. When she’s ready, she will be available for adoption through GPAAS. Hopefully, Gritty will find someone who recognizes just how perfect she is… and that her name is truly fitting!
