Blind Dog Abandoned in Mississippi Woods Hoped for His Owner’s Return

Date:

Meet Halo, a frail little girl discovered in the woods of Mississippi, curled up and barely clinging to life. Rescuers received a call about a ferocious pitbull, but what they found was heart-wrenching – Halo was far from vicious. She was blind, neglected, and so emaciated that she seemed ready to give up if not for the timely intervention of the rescuers.

Stacey and her husband, Mike, are prominent figures in the Mississippi rescue community. Many dogs adopted from the Lucky Dog Refuge in Stamford, Connecticut, owe their second chances to Stacey. Halo was one of those dogs, found in dire condition, essentially a skeleton – just skin and bones. With the help of some enticing food, Stacey and Mike managed to coax her out of the woods, but her state was alarming.

Given her severe condition, it was evident that Halo had endured a lack of basic needs like food and shelter for weeks, months, or even years. Likely, she had been used for breeding until deemed ‘unusable’, leading her owner to abandon her in the woods.

“Her ears were cut with a pair of scissors, and she was most likely used for breeding. One eye is injured and damaged; the other is blind, probably from an untreated eye disease,” Stacey Frazier shared on her Facebook post.

It’s heartbreaking to imagine the suffering Halo endured, but thankfully, she is now in good hands.

The Road To Recovery

Named Halo, as her survival seemed uncertain initially, she overcame the odds. Stacey brought her home, initiating treatment with antibiotics and a proper diet. Throughout her recovery, there were moments of uncertainty, but Halo proved to be a resilient fighter. “We knew her sight was impaired, but we didn’t know if she was fully blind until the doctor confirmed it. We believe she can see shadows; however, she tends to walk right into things,” Jessica from Lucky Dog Refuge explained to The Dodo.

With Stacey, Halo discovered true love for the first time in her life, and her happiness was evident. After months of recovery, the time came for her to be transferred to the Connecticut rescue.

Halo Found A Forever Home

Upon her arrival at the rescue, Halo’s transformation was remarkable – she radiated joy, a stark contrast from her previous state in the woods. The staff quickly discovered her fondness for ice cream, and she would express her excitement whenever it was offered. “Every day she shows us how grateful she is for what she has now. She’s truly an angel,” Jessica commented. However, the missing piece remained – a forever home.

Then, a wonderful twist occurred – Halo found the perfect forever home where she’s thriving. Moreover, her new pawrents decided to adopt her best friend from the shelter, Layne, allowing the two to continue their journey together.

Enjoy your new life, Halo; you truly deserve it! Check out Halo’s story here:
