For a dog, saying goodbye to their favorite human can be one of the most heart-wrenching experiences in their brief lifetime.
Sadly, a lot of owners either fail to realize this or choose to ignore it. In recent times, there has been a troubling rise in the number of dogs finding themselves in the confines of a kennel after spending years in a loving home.
This was the fate that befell Chai— a four-year-old dog whose owner, without any explanation, surrendered her to animal control. The image of her sorrowful expression quickly circulated online and touched many hearts.
Alongside the empathy, there was also curiosity surrounding her unique breed.
That Heartbroken Look
After Chai was left at animal control on January 9, her heart-wrenching photograph from the shelter quickly gained traction online.
It wasn’t long before the team at Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, Georgia, noticed her plight. They promptly decided to rescue this abandoned dog with a sad demeanor.
“She was cheerful and affectionate when she first arrived, but she gradually began to withdraw,” shared Jackie Spett, the marketing and development director at Angels, in an interview with Newsweek.
The gradual deterioration of this dog exemplified that the shelter wasn’t the suitable environment for her. Consequently, they acted swiftly, and by January 12, they successfully placed her in a foster home in Atlanta, Georgia.
“Her foster will keep her for a required 14-day quarantine period, after which she can be adopted, provided she remains healthy and free of any issues,” Spett explained. “Chai’s foster mentioned she is very energetic, so an active home would be ideal.”
While Chai still appeared somewhat anxious and forlorn, she started to feel more at ease, revealing her personality in a nurturing environment.
Her online supporters quickly discovered this uplifting news and were overjoyed. However, many still found themselves pondering one particular question about this dog.
People Kept Guessing
Just two days after settling into her new home, Angels Among Us Pet Rescue shared Chai’s story in a Facebook post.
The post detailed the unfortunate circumstances leading to this lovely dog’s abandonment and opened with the question: “Does anyone know what breed I am?”
This question captured a lot of attention. Many began to speculate, with guesses predominantly suggesting a Dachshund mix or a combination of German Shepherd and Labrador. Spett mentioned that another popular inference was “the good old Georgia brown dog.”
The post rapidly drew a significant number of reactions, shares, and comments. Yet, amidst the flurry of responses, many people focused more on Chai’s future rather than her specific breed.
“Sweet baby. She is beautiful no matter what breed.” remarked one commenter.
“😢💔♥️🙏🙏🙏 poor sweet baby I pray you get a forever loving home full of love and a loving family ♥️🙏🙏,” added another.
In agreement, a third commenter said: “She looks absolutely depressed. Poor baby. How could anyone leave her behind?”
While we also struggle to comprehend how someone could forsake such a sweet face, ultimately what matters is that there are compassionate individuals ready to lend a hand and bring joy back into the lives of these furry companions, irrespective of their breed.
