This was the situation for Chewie, an adorable eight-year-old dog who was sadly left behind when his family moved from their rental home.
Chewie didn’t cope well with this sudden change. Without family, companionship, or care for his needs, he suffered alone. Fortunately, he caught the attention of dedicated rescuers who provided him with a transformation and gave him a life he truly deserved.
A Much-Needed Makeover
Upon his arrival at the shelter, Mel, the groomer, received him with open arms and a heavy heart. She was astounded that someone could leave such a lovable dog, allowing him to reach such a distressing state.
Mel got right to work, hoping Chewie would let her clean him up with a bath and a much-needed trim.
Since matted fur can conceal injuries, fleas, irritated skin, or other health problems, groomers have to be very cautious when tending to these dogs, ensuring they don’t inflict further harm.
Mel began patiently cutting away the long mats obscuring Chewie’s face before moving to those on his body. She was stunned to discover the hefty belly beneath all that fur.
“One surprising thing she noticed immediately was his weight. Despite his abandonment, he was overweight. A significantly overweight pet is just as clear a sign of neglect,” said Rocky Kanaka in a TikTok video.
Another alarming observation was the ulcerated eye. This condition often arises from injuries, possible attacks from other animals, or mistreatment.
One remarkable aspect was how well Chewie behaved throughout his pampering session. His haircut, bath, and the drying process went off without a hitch, leaving everyone at the shelter astounded.
Mel was sure to shower him with positive reinforcement, letting him know what a good boy he was during the entire grooming process.
Once he was all cleaned up, with beautifully groomed fur, trimmed nails, and a distinctive mustache, Chewie’s charm truly shone.
It was no surprise that Frosted Faces Foundation, a dedicated nonprofit rescue based in Ramona, California, decided to rescue Chewie from the shelter and embrace him in their care.
He now enjoys his days in California, having a great time while waiting to find a loving family that will provide the happy life he has always deserved.
