Senior Race Dog Finally Finds Forever Home After Five Years in the Kennel

Date:

Flash… such an apt name for a racing dog.

However, life as a racing dog was anything but ideal.

Flash had triumphed in numerous races throughout his life, but sadly, he was losing the most critical one: the race to find his forever home.

This courageous pup was halted just shy of the finish line and returned to the starting point, back to the kennel where he faced loneliness.

With each new dawn, Flash’s hope dwindled. He started to believe that his human would never come for him.

Then, suddenly… a miracle occurred!

Flash was called to compete in another race, and this time, he crossed the finish line as the winner.

What was his reward?

A loving family and a forever home.

The Race of His Life

Have you ever pondered what happens to Greyhounds
when they retire?

Indeed, these dogs are the athletes of the canine world, with careers of their own. Typically, they find their way into adoption programs or rehabilitation facilities.

While that may seem ideal—a dog finally retiring—it is far from it. Consider the harsh treatment many of these dogs endure.

The Humane Society of the United States highlights this serious issue:

Numerous racing dogs sustain injuries during competitions; as per state records, a racing Greyhound dies every three days on a Florida track. These social animals often spend the majority of their time isolated, confined to cages for 20-23 hours each day, deprived of the chance to walk or play.

Flash was one of countless Greyhounds encompassed by this grim reality.

Following the conclusion of his racing career, Flash found himself surrendered to a shelter, where he languished in solitude and sorrow. The transition was monumental, but not for the better. Although his life as a racer was challenging, the kennel life proved to be even harsher.

Flash became withdrawn, yearning for a forever family… someone who would love him.

As years progressed, he remained the eldest resident of the shelter. It became evident to the volunteers that retired racing Greyhounds are often passed over for adoption. Older dogs tend to be overlooked in shelters.

Yet, not everything was bleak.

Flash received another call to race, and he dashed as fast as he could into the arms of his new hoomom and hoodad.

A Brand-New Greyhound

Flash’s journey serves as a testament that hope is the last thing to fade. This gentle soul was well into his senior years when a compassionate couple decided to welcome him into their loving home. He gained two sisters, Bonnie and Lulu, and pawrents ready to do anything for him, transforming his life into one filled with safety.

Initially, Flash struggled with the concept of home.

It’s no surprise; he spent so many years relegated to a corner that he nearly forgot the essence of love.

Yet, hoomom and hoodad recognized that Flash needed time to adjust.

“He appeared somber. He was genuinely shut down,” recalled Flash’s hoomum.

Flash needed to navigate his new environment at a gentle pace. Everything seemed so foreign and intimidating.

Eventually, Flash began warming up to the idea of having a family. He gradually overcame his fear of everyday sounds and his sisters’ boundless energy. Flash adapted and blossomed into a brand-new Greyhound.

As he opened up, hoomom and hoodad discovered what a true treasure they had found. Flash turned out to be quite the goofball! He embraced life and found joy in the simplest pleasures, such as playing with toys and frolicking in the garden with his sisters.

Oh, how he loved those toys!

After receiving his very first toy, Flash transformed into a playful pup, revealing his sweet, caring, and adorable nature. Thus began his obsession, and mom and dad were more than happy to foster it.

Flash’s life became whole: he finally had everything.

This senior Greyhound couldn’t have dreamed of a better family to share his golden years with. Hoomom and hoodad understand the nuances of caring for senior dogs, having previously welcomed Lulu and Bonnie, along with their late companion Murphy, into their home before Flash arrived.

Although Flash’s body bears the strain of years of racing, he continues to feel sore, as if he tackled a mile yesterday. His pawrents recognize the need for a relaxed pace. They ensure their adventures are undertaken with care.

If they maintain their exemplary care, Flash will undoubtedly enjoy many more years brimming with joyful snoozes in the sun, precious cuddle moments, and delightful squeaky toys.

After enduring years of solitude, Flash is truly entitled to be pampered with overwhelming love.

Flash’s Message

The tale of a discarded and exploited Greyhound is sure to linger in your thoughts, just like it does for me. We need to take action regarding this breed and their mistreatment. Please consider it.

Recently, Flash took a moment to share his story on his Instagram account:

“Finally, I had a cozy bed to rest in. I received my happy ending, but I shouldn’t have had to wait this long. No Greyhound (or any breed) should endure such a wait. If you have the opportunity to adopt or foster a dog, please consider us seniors. My hoomans assure you won’t regret it.”
