Playful Dog Turns Shy After Spending 1,700 Days in Shelter Hoping for a Forever Home

Date:

JP was a charming pup who ensured that his owner enjoyed the best days imaginable!

They shared countless moments together filled with fun and unforgettable adventures. Sadly, when JP’s owner was deployed for military duty, there were no options for caring for this delightful pup.

Consequently, JP found a new home with the kind individuals at the Bideawee Animal Shelter, an animal rescue organization located in New York City, where he would spend the next 1700 days!

Although he came to the shelter as a lively and joyful dog, pouring love and affection onto everyone, those five years at the shelter took a serious toll on him.

Prolonged Stay

Upon his arrival at the New York City shelter, he was excited to meet all his new furry companions and human friends. However, as the years passed, JP’s enthusiasm noticeably waned.

He became more cautious around new companions, requiring extra time to warm up to them.

“…This response is quite common given the uncertainties of shelter life. He’s simply more cautious of unfamiliar faces. Nonetheless, he cherishes his Bideawee caregivers. Although he appreciates the care and affection he receives, nothing can compare to the love of a genuine home,” stated Melissa Treuman, senior director of development and communication at Bideawee, in an interview with The Dodo.

When this lovable pup is surrounded by familiar faces, he transforms into a true lovebug!

JP thrives on receiving all the cuddles and belly scratches he can handle, not to mention the treats! Whenever the staff presents him with a delicious snack, he devours it in one swift bite!

He is also incredibly fond of spending time outdoors, relishing the chance to explore nature. He happily follows his humans wherever they venture and eagerly participates in all activities they offer.

Continuing the Search for a Home

Although he may take a moment to warm up to you, once he does, you’re sure to have an incredible companion!

“One of our dedicated volunteers is so fond of him that she visits every single day during her lunch break — and has done so for years,” Treuman shared.

JP’s newfound shyness isn’t the only barrier to his adoption. Unfortunately, his size is also a factor.

“Recent data from Hill’s Pet Nutrition’s State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report shows that while 66 percent of people are inclined to adopt a dog from a shelter, only 24 percent indicated they would adopt a large dog. That’s less than 1 in 4 individuals. Moreover, according to Shelter Animals Count, large dogs have experienced an extended length of stay since 2019,” she elaborated.

Yet, despite these challenges, JP remains hopeful!

He firmly believes that his ideal home is out there, and he is determined to find it. His friends at the shelter have decided to support him by waiving his adoption fees and providing his new family with a year’s supply of Science Diet Senior Vitality dog food.

As an older gentleman, JP would thrive best in a calm home without young children or other pets.

His heart is overflowing with affection, and he is eager to share it with his new family. JP is a gentle spirit who is ready to bring joy and laughter to any home, given he gets the opportunity.

If you’re able to provide a loving home for this sweet pup, please reach out to the Bideawee Animal Shelter for further information.
