If you’re a literary enthusiast, you already understand the profound joy that books can bring.
Diving into the stories held within those pages can be one of life’s most enchanting experiences. But did you know that dogs can experience something similar?
Indeed, you heard correctly! Tucked away in a kennel at the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) is a dog named Hopper, who gazes at the door every day when the clock strikes 3. While you might presume he’s anticipating potential adopters, he’s actually waiting for a beloved friend.
Hopper, The Joyful Pup

Each day at 3 p.m., a 9-year-old named Nehemiah enters the Jacksonville Humane Society with a single goal – to read a book. As soon as Hopper spots him, he gets so excited that his tail starts wagging furiously!
Although he is quite energetic in his kennel, Hopper undergoes a remarkable transformation when Nehemiah brings out one of his captivating books. He shifts from a lively pup jumping about to a tranquil companion who sits patiently and smiles at the volunteer.
“Hopper is generally an energetic dog in his kennel, but when someone like Nehemiah reads to him, he becomes very focused on them. He enjoys lounging right by the window across from them,” shared Samantha Ahnen, JHS’s community engagement manager, with The Dodo.

Nehemiah dedicates 30 minutes to reading to every dog at the shelter as part of the Pawsitive Readers program, and he notices a marked change in Hopper’s demeanor when a book comes into play.
“Hopper is an incredibly sweet dog [with] lots of energy. Reading seems to soothe him,” noted Joanna McKenzie, Nehemiah’s grandmother.
Occasionally, Hopper feels that merely listening isn’t sufficient, so he starts adding his own commentary to the story by barking!

A Tale a Day Keeps the Blues Away
Although Nehemiah loves reading stories to his furry companions, he would feel even happier if all of them had a home to call their own. To help ease their anxiety, he spends time with them alongside his books.
“He realizes that his reading provides comfort to the dogs and benefits his school work. He enjoys being involved and gets excited when the dogs are adopted!” McKenzie remarked.
Ahnen also emphasized the positive impact this has on the dogs’ well-being.
“Research indicates that listening to someone read aloud reduces stress levels in animals, promoting relaxation. Shelters can be intimidating and stressful environments for many pets, so at JHS, we strive to create a calming atmosphere for dogs and cats while they are with us,” Ahnen added.

Hopper, the dog, exemplifies how initiatives like this can significantly enhance animals’ quality of life while they await a new beginning. Thanks to a generous organization called Dolly’s Dream, his adoption fees are already covered, leaving just one step – finding this sweet boy a loving home.
He would thrive best in a household where he is the sole pet, allowing him to soak up all the love and affection.
“He’s on the lookout for a family that will be patient and gentle with him, giving him the time he needs to come out of his shell. Once you become Hopper’s best friend (and it won’t take long!), you’ll find him to be the most faithful and loving companion,” said Ahnen.

So, if you’re a book lover in search of a companion to form a reading club, look no further – Hopper is eager for your adoption application.
And for those involved in animal shelters, consider reading to your anxious furry residents!
“We highly encourage everyone to explore reading programs at their local shelters. Many shelters across the U.S. offer similar initiatives, and it’s a wonderful way to support animals in your local community!” Ahnen emphasized.
