On an early morning at the Yadkin County Animal Shelter, a woman named Breanna Gilliam expected just another day. However, upon arrival, she noticed a dark shape by the sign at the end of the driveway but dismissed it at first. It wasn’t until she heard barks emanating from that spot that she realized something was amiss.
You Are Safe Now, Sweetie
When Gilliam reached the sign, she was devastated to find a pup tied to it, visibly frightened and hesitant to approach her. “The poor girl was tied to our sign. She was very scared at first and wouldn’t come to me,” she recalled in an interview with The Dodo.
The dog, named Millie, was discovered attached to a sign that said, ‘Abandoning an animal is cruel and illegal. Please do not leave animals unattended at this location at any time.’ Sadly, someone had disregarded this warning, leaving her alone in the dark.
Fortunately, with some time and patience, Gilliam reassured Millie that she was there to help. Once inside the shelter, she realized that Millie was exceptionally clean and in perfect health, implying that she had been well-cared for and was likely a house dog. “She definitely looked like an indoor dog—very potty trained and calm, with such a sweet and submissive demeanor,” Gilliam noted.
A Happy Ending
Given Millie’s excellent condition, the shelter decided to expedite her adoption. They shared her story on social media, and it wasn’t long before someone noticed the adorable pup. “When I saw their Facebook post about her being abandoned, it brought me to tears. Her face and eyes truly reached into my soul. I immediately reached out about adopting her,” said Kathy Culler, Millie’s new mom.
Culler and her family had recently experienced the loss of their beloved rescue dog and felt it was the right moment to expand their family. A meet-and-greet was arranged to see if Culler and Millie would be a good match. The instant they met in the shelter’s hallway, it was clear they had a special connection.
In no time, Millie found her forever home with a loving mom who promised her the world. “As we drove away, she climbed into my lap and as we passed the sign where she had been tied, I vowed she’d never be abandoned again,” Culler shared.
Since then, adorable Millie has flourished in her new home, surrounded by furry siblings who adore her and a family that constantly showers her with love. “I can’t understand why anyone would abandon her. Someone else’s loss was definitely our gain,” Culler concluded.
