Rescuers Saved a Pregnant Dog, Only to Discover the Father Was in the Same Shelter

Date:

When a little pup named Pita was brought to a shelter in Los Angeles, the staff was not fully equipped to care for her due to her dire condition.

The shelter was extremely overcrowded, and Pita was a very pregnant dog ready to give birth at any moment.

Because Pita required constant observation and her own space, the Los Angeles rescue organization urgently needed assistance!

They contacted MaeDay Rescue, a non-profit dog rescue in Los Angeles, which promptly agreed to take her in.

Upon seeing how large Pita’s belly was, Natalie Garcia, the founder of MaeDay Rescue, was utterly astonished.

“She looked like she had swallowed a watermelon. It was unbelievable. She could barely walk and seemed very uncomfortable,” Garcia shared with The Dodo.

Pita’s belly was indeed enormous!

Garcia decided to take this expectant mother to the veterinarian for an ultrasound to assess her condition.

After the ultrasound, everyone was taken aback by the number of puppies that tiny dog was carrying.

With her delivery imminent, it was crucial that she be placed in foster care without delay.

Fortunately, MaeDay Rescue was able to give this soon-to-be mama a nurturing foster home that would make sure her giving birth experience was as comfortable as possible.

Pita was understandably anxious throughout this period and her pregnancy took a toll on her. Regardless, she felt secure at her foster home where all she had to do now was wait.

The Babies Are Coming

A few days after placing Pita with her foster family, Garcia received a frantic call from Pita’s foster mom.

“I was out at dinner. The foster called me saying, ‘I think it’s happening. She’s digging and licking herself.’ I literally left in the middle of dinner,” she recounted.

Garcia and the foster mom stayed by Pita’s side all night, providing assistance wherever they could.

By morning, Pita had become a proud mother to five healthy puppies: Baguette, Focaccia, Ciabatta, Loaf, and Rye.

Both Garcia and the foster mom were thrilled to see such a beautiful litter. However, she noticed an intriguing detail about their fur.

Meet The Dad

Garcia discovered that the puppies had a mix of black and yellow fur: black from their mom, Pita, and yellow from their dad, who was actually Bagel – a dog still at the shelter!

Pita and Bagel had arrived at the shelter at the same time and spent considerable time together, leading everyone to assume he was the father of Pita’s puppies.

Sadly, Bagel did not leave the shelter with Pita when she was pulled due to her pregnancy. Nevertheless, MaeDay Rescue also brought him in so that they could reunite.

“I thought, ‘Why not get the complete family? We made so many jokes about him not being present, like where is he? He hasn’t even sent a card to congratulate her on the babies,” Garcia explained.

Before long, Bagel also found a foster home. Although he was initially apprehensive around humans, similar to Pita, he eventually warmed up to them.

Since then, both amazing parents have found loving forever homes. It’s only a matter of time before their puppies do as well.
