In Fort Wayne, Indiana, a tow truck driver named Andrew was driving through a wooded area when he noticed something unusual. He caught a glimpse of a small face peeking out from the sticks and mud. Curious, Andrew stopped his truck to investigate.
Hide And Seek
Indeed, hiding in the woods was a small brown dog, scared and alone. Before it could run away, Andrew snapped a photo and shared it on Facebook, hoping someone would recognize him. He also sent the image to Lost Dogs of Fort Wayne (LDFW), a platform for posting lost and found dogs in Indiana, in hopes that someone would know where to find this little guy.
Rescue Mission
Upon seeing the photo, the owner of LDFW and another dog lover set out to find the pup. They were soon joined by four more animal lovers eager to help ensure his safety.
The search didn’t take long, as they soon spotted the pup across a creek. They carefully caught him and took him to Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control (FWACC).
At The Shelter
After receiving essential medical care, the shelter staff named the dog Joey. He initially seemed lethargic, but soon after, was given a couple of toys, and his demeanor changed. The staff observed him enjoying himself as he played!
“When we heard of how many people … were willing to drop everything they were doing to come rescue Joey, it gave us hope. His rescue is a testimony to how powerful a group of animal lovers can be,” stated Delaney Atkinson, FWACC community outreach educator.
As time passed, Joey’s health and confidence improved significantly, transforming into a lively companion. His journey served as an inspiration to the staff, reminding them that past experiences do not define anyone—human or canine. Despite everything he had endured, Joey maintained a remarkable spirit of joy.
Forever Home
The staff, amazed by Joey’s remarkable story, continued to share his journey on social media, hoping to inspire others just as he had inspired them.
Shortly after, a woman noticed this brave little dog and decided to meet him. As soon as they locked eyes, it was clear they were meant to be together. Now, Joey lives the life he always dreamed of, surrounded by a loving family that includes another dog and two cats.
