It’s a well-known saying that dogs are a human’s truest companions!
The bond shared between dogs and their humans is incredibly profound. The moment a dog steps into a home, they swiftly become a cherished member of the family, bringing joy, affection, and solace.
This deep connection makes the loss of a beloved dog especially heartbreaking, leaving their owners struggling to cope with the absence of their closest friend.
A Heartbreaking Incident
Memphis, a charming dog, joined his family when he was merely two years old.
Shortly after his arrival, he made it clear that one of his favorite activities involved escapades and discovering the outdoors.
“He’s always been quite the adventurer. One of his most memorable outings was a visit to a nearby bar, where he spent the evening relishing popcorn with the patrons. He’s such a sociable dog that strangers often picked him up, and I would have to track him down,” shared Memphis’ mom, Felecia Schoonover, with The Dodo.
In April 2019, Memphis had another escapade. While Felecia was taking a shower and her children were playing in the backyard, this clever pup recognized the perfect opportunity for an adventure.
After finishing her shower, Felecia began searching for her beloved furball, only to discover that he had vanished.
“We drove around the neighborhood shouting his name, but had no success. I spent the entire week posting on Facebook and regularly checking the local animal shelter. Over the years, I’ve continued to search their website and Facebook page, hoping to find him,” she recounted.
Being apart from her cherished dog left Felecia devastated. Yet, her love for Memphis fueled her relentless hope!
After years of searching for her furry companion, Felecia finally located him—but the circumstances were unexpected.
Recognizable Features
While browsing the internet, Felecia stumbled upon a missing dog flyer featuring a remarkably familiar face.
It was Memphis!
The new family had posted about one of his recent escapes, but fortunately, they had managed to locate him.
Knowing where Memphis had been all along brought Felecia a sense of relief. Nevertheless, seeing him with his new family, she couldn’t bear the thought of disrupting their happy relationship.
“I was thrilled to learn he had been taken care of all these years. I posted in the same group about his background, and someone informed me that his new family had acquired him after someone snatched him and sold him. I didn’t want to take him away from a family that loved him as much as I did,” she shared.
Even though Memphis’ previous family missed him greatly, they were determined not to inflict the pain of loss on another family.
Ultimately, Felecia chose to leave a note with the local animal shelter, informing them that she would welcome Memphis back if he ever came into their care.
“I never reached out to his new family because I felt it was unnecessary. I wanted him to be happy, and they were doing just that. It pained me to realize he had been so close all this time, but it would be unfair to disrupt his life,” Felecia explained.
After some time, Felecia received a call she never anticipated.
Reunited at Last
On the line was someone from the animal shelter informing her that Memphis was with them and asking if she wanted him back. Without hesitation, Felecia agreed and rushed to reunite with her pup.
Although Felecia had already adopted another dog after losing Memphis, she felt a mix of excitement and anxiety at the thought of managing two pets.
She was also uncertain if the two would get along, but she was committed to giving it a try.
“Baby sister adores him, and he is quite generous with his kisses. He’s just as lovable as ever, and his favorite spot remains next to me on the couch. He still enjoys rooting around for hidden treats and cuddling my son as they did when they were both young pups,” she remarked.
Memphis has certainly experienced a thrilling and eventful journey back to his original family.
