After Months of Severe Matting, Kind Souls Helped This Dog Shine in His Full Glory

Date:

While dogs are often seen as man’s best friend, not every owner is worthy of such a loyal companion. The staff at the RSPCA witnessed this firsthand when police turned over a dog in dire need of help, having been found in deplorable conditions after being removed from an neglectful owner.

Barney, a dog burdened by severe matting, left the rescuers astonished as they struggled to see the dog beneath the tangled mess of fur. Shocked but determined, they resolved to do everything possible to restore this sweet dog to his former glory.

This was the least they could do for him under the circumstances.

Severely Matted and Neglected

Despite witnessing Barney’s shocking condition, the RSPCA team was left stunned by the extent of his neglect upon close inspection.

“He was incredibly matted, with heavy clumps of fur that were likely filled with dirt or feces, tightly clinging to his back,” remarked RSPCA Inspector Tina Nash in her witness statement.

This heartbreaking situation stemmed from the negligence of his owner, Tim Ronald Springett, who attempted to excuse his actions by saying that Barney, being a Black Russian Terrier, didn’t require grooming.

Such a defense failed to convince anyone, especially when the condition of the dog was so apparent. Poor Barney was unable to see due to the fur that obscured his vision, and the weight of the matted coat caused him significant pain whenever he tried to walk.

Motivated to help, the team dedicated considerable time to Barney’s grooming, ultimately removing an astonishing 17 pounds of matted fur.

“The dog had been forced to support a coat that weighed roughly 21% of his body weight,” stated a veterinarian who assisted in Barney’s care. “This weight would have increased significantly when the dog was wet.”

This shocking revelation highlighted the pain and suffering that poor Barney endured for 19 long months while his owner neglected his grooming needs.

Justice Served

After enduring such a prolonged ordeal and following a grueling grooming process, Barney finally experienced the warmth of care and was greeted with renewed joy. The people who cared for him were overjoyed to see his lovely smile, surrounded by affection and attention.

According to the RSPCA, “Barney is now in private boarding and is ready for rehoming.” There’s no doubt this lovely boy will soon find a forever home filled with love.

Meanwhile, Barney’s previous owner, Tim, faced the legal consequences of his negligence in court. Although he tried to claim illness as a reason for not caring for his dog, justice prevailed.

Tim received a five-year ban on owning animals along with a 12-month community service order. He was also ordered to pay $500 in costs and a $120 victim surcharge.
Ultimately, justice was served, and we sincerely hope Barney finds an owner who will cherish and care for him, ensuring he never faces such darkness again.
