One minute, you’re staring down the end, and the next, the spotlight is on you.

This perfectly encapsulates Max’s journey as a rescue senior dog.

But sometimes, life takes unexpected turns.

Max not only found rescue but was also granted a life beyond his wildest dreams.

And here’s how his story unfolded…

Just a few days away from a dire fate, Max thought he had run out of time, and truthfully, his past was far from joyful.

This Yorkie Jack Russell mix was just 12 years old when he was saved. Max spent a significant amount of time in the shelter, passed over by potential adopters and wondering when his moment would finally come. He could hardly believe that someone like Lauren and Foster would choose him.

Max came into the lives of the young couple after Foster’s father and stepmother decided to adopt him from the Colorado shelter.

Max proved to be a handful for Foster’s stepmom, who had only previously cared for Shih Tzus. Max’s larger-than-life energy simply didn’t mesh with them, prompting his move to Virginia with Lauren and Foster.

Life became a delight, and Max found himself with people who truly understood him.

But this was just the beginning. Little did Max know what else awaited him.

One day, during a casual walk with Lauren, a theater worker, talent scout, and artistic director named Katy Brown spotted Max. Katy, affiliated with Barter Theatre in Abingdon, saw potential in him as the next star!

The Barter Theatre, now over 90 years old, continues to produce adaptations like the beloved The Wizard of Oz. Max bore a striking resemblance to Toto, and Katy had to cast him for the role.

Max’s life transformed once more, introducing him to the dazzling world of theater and paving a path to new successes.

Is He Max, or Is He Toto?

The theater crew instantly adored Max. This charming rescue senior captured their hearts, showcasing a talent for tricks that delighted everyone.

It became apparent that fate intervened and led them to their perfect Toto.

With preparations complete, it was time for Max to step into his role. The theater was set to produce 56 performances featuring Max as Toto.

Busy days lay ahead for Max, but he welcomed them, motivated by one secret to his success… treats!

“He’s a people pleaser and the treats definitely don’t hurt either,” Smith shared with Newsweek. “It’s quite funny because I’ve attended several shows, and he’ll look out into the audience,” Smith continued. “He’s unfazed and truly enjoys being around the other actors on stage with him.”

The reviews for the recent adaptation of The Wizard of Oz have been remarkable. Attendees from all around have been flocking to witness the new cast, particularly enchanted by Max as their canine superstar. There is a unanimous consensus: Max was destined for stardom!

Though his discovery came later in life, Max’s future shines bright.

Next destination? Hollywood!
