Family in Hiding Rescued from Abandoned House Just in Time

Date:

The winter months are particularly challenging for stray dogs left to fend for themselves outdoors. Lacking adequate shelter and nourishing food, many of these furry companions are left fighting for survival amid harsh, frigid conditions.

Disconnected from proper living conditions, this mother dog and her pups were nearing a critical point of desperation. Exposed to freezing temperatures and hunger, their only wish was for a warm, safe space to call home.

The Last-Minute Miracle

Donna Lochmann, a dedicated dog rescuer from Stray Rescue of St. Louis, was alerted by a local resident about a pregnant dog residing in an abandoned building nearby.

“We followed paw prints through the snow to an abandoned building where a Good Samaritan said they saw a pregnant dog. The single-digit freezing temperatures were perilous and could be fatal for newborns,” the team from Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared on Facebook.

Quickly, Donna and her team made their way to the location. After an extensive search of the derelict house, they finally discovered a dog curled up in the corner – alongside her six puppies!

To their surprise, this dedicated mother had already given birth and managed to keep her pups warm despite the frigid conditions.

“Our fingers and toes hurt from the cold, and we can’t believe how this resilient little family survived as long as they did,” they noted in their Facebook update.

All the puppies were trembling as they sought warmth from their mother’s body, but the house was simply too cold.

Off To A New Start

Exactly as they intended, Donna and her team first secured the mother dog to encourage her puppies to follow. Although she was frightened and hesitant at first, her demeanor changed as soon as she realized her family was safe.

The mother, who was later affectionately named Grammys, was successfully rescued from the house with her six adorable pups, who were playfully named: Emmys, Oscars, SAG, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Tonys.

After a quick examination at the veterinarian, the entire family was transported to a foster home where they would receive the necessary care.

The moment they entered the cozy surroundings, the family began to warm up and display their true personalities. This marked the first time these affectionate creatures experienced the comfort of a caring home – and they relished it!

“Look how comfortable and relaxed they are now that they’re safe and warm in a foster home. The abandoned house they were in felt even colder than the freezing air outside,” the SRSL team commented on Facebook.

The foster family is committed to giving the dogs as much tender loving care as possible. Given their challenging past, it will undeniably require time for them to learn trust and establish appropriate behavior with people.

Once they are fully rehabilitated and healthy, Grammys and her puppies will be available for adoption.

With any luck, their next journey will lead them to a loving family and a forever home brimming with affection and endless opportunities for adventure!
