Being a dog owner comes with its challenges. You need to be prepared for various hurdles that might arise and be equipped to tackle them.

But what should you do when you have a tiny puppy who is having a tough time gaining weight?

In such circumstances, it’s best to seek the expertise of a professional who knows how to manage these issues and can provide assistance to the puppy.

This story is about a small puppy facing difficulties in gaining weight, but her rescuer stepped in to offer her help.

A Challenging Recovery

When Sweetpea first arrived at her rescue, her health was in very poor condition. She was underweight and urgently needed assistance.

Her rescuers were unsure how to proceed, but they committed to doing their best to help her.

They discovered she was weak and dehydrated, so they provided her with subcutaneous fluids.

During the night, they opted to give her several small meals that were easy for her to eat to see if her condition would improve.

After 36 hours, there was some improvement as she consumed her meals and gained a bit of weight. This was a hopeful sign suggesting she could fully recover if she continued on this path.

Each day, she continued to show remarkable recovery, with her rescuers dedicated to providing her with frequent meals.

She began to gather the strength to move around and attempt to walk, though it remained challenging and she was progressing slowly.

After a few days, her rescuers observed that Sweetpea delighted in mealtime and eagerly awaited someone to come and feed her.

At four weeks old, it became apparent that she was starting to show her personality and engage in play. This indicated that her circumstances were positively changing.

Gradual Progress Each Day

Before long, she would even begin to run. Sweetpea would make small laps around her shelter and then curl up for a nap. It was simply adorable.

She still needed to gain some more weight before any blood work or diagnostic procedures could be safely undertaken.

Once she made progress on that front, her rescuers quickly sought to discover the root cause of her health issues.

They discovered that she was suffering from Hydrocephalus, impacting both sides of her brain. She will receive treatment, but it will take time.

She was placed in an oxygen chamber for therapy, which she remained in for a while. After her session, there was a marked improvement in her condition in just one day.

Sweetpea is now always ready to play and excited for mealtime. She’s even started wagging her tail, which is incredibly heartwarming.

After two months of dedicated care and significant progress, she is thriving and has even participated in an adoption event.

During the event, she received a delightful gift from the staff. It was a custom-made bandanna just for her—a truly special present.

Although it may take time before this sweet girl is adopted into a forever home, her rescuers are thrilled to accompany her on this journey and ensure she fully recovers.

Until that moment arrives, she will continue to enjoy playtime with other dogs, savor delicious meals, and relish the company of those who care for her so deeply.
