Virginia Rescuers Shocked by Discovery Inside Tiny Chip Box

Date:

It is hard for all true dog lovers to witness the heartbreaking situations that our furry friends endure daily. The level of neglect, abuse, and abandonment is overwhelming, and it’s difficult to comprehend the extent of these issues. Imagine the emotional toll on those who dedicate their lives to helping animals. Rescuers and shelter employees face numerous heartbreaks each day, yet they always muster the strength and motivation to continue their important work.

The staff at SPCA of Petersburg & Colonial Heights recently experienced this when they discovered an open chip box emitting tiny whimpers from within. Heartbroken but determined, they set out to ensure this story had a happy conclusion.

Poor Little Ones

When a staff member from SPCA in Colonial Heights, Virginia, first heard the whining from the box, they feared the worst. A quick look inside confirmed their suspicions: there were seven helpless puppies abandoned and left out in the cold. The team felt a mix of heartbreak and anger over this inhumane situation.

“These poor babies are only around 2-weeks-old, eyes barely open to not even open at all. They had urine staining and feces stuck to their bodies. THIS IS NOT THE ANSWER!!!!!!” Colonial Heights Animal Control wrote in their Facebook post.

Despite the frustrations, there was relief in knowing that they found the puppies, who wouldn’t have survived the 45 to 50-degree morning temperatures otherwise. The team acted quickly, bringing the pups inside to clean and warm them up, placing them in “a clean tote and a nice warm blanket,” and providing everything they needed.

However, with no mother in sight, the staff recognized the immense challenge of feeding and caring for these young creatures, prompting them to seek additional help.

Finally Safe And Sound

Given the situation, the SPCA reached out to Richmond Ruff House, a rescue organization in Richmond, Virginia. Despite their near capacity, they eagerly agreed to help. Upon arrival, the pups found a cozy bed, a warm blanket, and most importantly, a foster dog named Libby who was nursing her own babies and could potentially help the orphaned pups.

“Libby is still nursing her babies, so it was worth a shot to see if they would take to her. So far no luck. Libby is certainly willing, though!!” the rescue shared on their Facebook post.

This situation required bottle feeding, which is demanding and costly. The dedicated rescue team and volunteers, touched by the puppies’ plight, refused to give up on them. They also recognized the need for financial support to cover the expensive feeding formula, and fortunately, many generous individuals stepped up with donations, ensuring the pups got the necessary resources to thrive.

Thanks to the collective effort of numerous caring individuals, these puppies are now safe and sound. Nonetheless, a long journey lies ahead before they find their forever homes. We remain optimistic that they will all ultimately enjoy the happily ever after they deserve.
