Rescuers Develop Innovative Approach to Help Traumatized Pittie Exit Kennel for the First Time

Date:

Witnessing the way some people mistreat animals, like dogs and cats, is truly disheartening.

Many fail to understand that abuse leaves lasting impacts that can be incredibly difficult to mend.

This leads to numerous animals isolating themselves from humans or fleeing at the mere sight of any living creature.

It’s tragic, and it must come to an end. One such Pittie lived in fear of humans until she was rescued by compassionate individuals determined to improve her life.

A Gradual Healing Process

When Tiana was rescued by Pennsylvania SPCA, she was utterly frightened of everyone around her.

Her previous owner was extremely cruel and neglectful, resulting in her deep-seated trauma.

Although her rescuers didn’t know if she would ever heal, they committed to helping her recover step by step.

Even in the safety of her new surroundings, she rarely left her kennel, demonstrating how fearful she was.

Maddie Bernstein shared with The Dodo: “She would cower in her kennel, head lowered, ears back, and with a hunched body on approach. She trembled entirely and huddled in the back of her kennel.

The team attempted various strategies to encourage her to come out. They tried enticing Tiana with treats and walking other dogs nearby.

Despite their efforts, nothing seemed to work, which led the Pennsylvania SPCA rescuers to think outside the box.

The Best Solutions Are Often the Simplest

Out of all their ideas, one stood out. Bernstein noted: “What ended up working was our staff member simply picking her up and carrying her out to a play yard.

Immediately, she began to relax. The staff were surprised, not expecting such a straightforward solution.

As she was being carried, Tiana engaged in play with one of the team members, visibly enjoying herself for the first time in a long while.

Recognizing what worked, they continued to assist her, and she began to improve significantly.

They always approached Tiana gently, understanding the need for her to heal without being overwhelmed. She had endured enough hardships and didn’t require any further stress.

Eventually, it became clear to the staff that she was just a charming dog yearning for a normal life.

Bernstein shared: “She’s really just a sweetheart. She loves to snuggle and be petted, and when she feels at ease, she does zoomies in the play yard and frolics like a puppy.

The rescuers are dedicating their efforts to help Tiana discover her forever home. She obviously needs a calm environment where she can adjust at her own speed.

For the time being, she is thrilled to be with her wonderful rescuers who are savoring each moment with her and providing her with everything she requires.
