Anxious German Shepherd Couldn’t Stop Spinning in Circles Due to Shelter Stress

Date:

Being a young pup confined in a kennel for a prolonged period can lead to significant stress quickly.

This stress often causes many dogs to withdraw, isolate themselves, and even lose their appetite.

Amidst all this, Romeo, a stunning German Shepherd with gentle eyes, began exhibiting a worrisome behavior – he started spinning uncontrollably.

Help Is Here

When Romeo first arrived at the Los Angeles shelter, he was quite calm and kept to himself. However, as time passed, he began spinning in circles in his kennel, showing no signs of stopping.

@kelsmcdonough if there any rescues, fosters, or potential adopters for this boy please please message me. southern california rescues are so overwhelmed that almost none are taking new dogs in 😔 to see how much he has changed by being in his kennel kills me. he was the calmest best boy when he first came in as a stray. lets get this boy free. 🙏🏼😔💗#adopt #adoption #rescue #rescuedog #rescuedogs #dog #dogs #adoptadog #shelter #dogshelter #animalshelter #germanshepherd #germanshepherdrescue #rescue #rescuedog #help ♬ Ambient-style emotional piano – MoppySound

“He was on the brink of being euthanized because he had stopped eating. I reached out for help on TikTok, and a woman named Jessica responded saying, ‘We want him’,” Kelsey shared with The Dodo.

Once Kelsey learned that someone was willing to adopt Romeo, she hurried to the Los Angeles shelter, picked him up, and took him to his new home without delay.

Despite feeling a bit anxious during the car journey, Romeo did something remarkable – he ate!

“I had food in my hand, and he eagerly ate it. He was clearly starving,” Kelsey recounted.

The delicious meal helped Romeo regain some of the much-needed energy, allowing him to express his excitement to start his new life with his new mom.

Back To Old Ways

In the initial twenty minutes at his new home, Romeo transformed into a new pup. However, he suddenly began spinning again.

“I took him outside, and he started spinning uncontrollably. I contacted the vet, who thought it was likely just stress from his time at the shelter,” Jessica explained.

They decided to take him out for a playdate in hopes of distracting him.

Unfortunately, the playdate didn’t provide the distraction they hoped.

However, Jessica had a brilliant idea: what if they used a ball to engage him? Once he spotted a ball rolling, all he thought about was chasing it and catching it.

“We thought, ‘Oh, wow, this could actually help distract him,’” she noted.

Since playing ball wasn’t an option indoors, Jessica devised an alternative distraction.

Thankfully, Romeo was a clever boy who responded well to commands. So, whenever he started spinning indoors, Jessica would instruct him to lie down, and he would comply.

Ultimately, Romeo was able to start relishing his life without the exhausting need to spin in circles.

“Romeo has definitely become a part of my family. He’s truly amazing and has become so well-trained that it’s no longer an issue,” Jessica concluded.

Final Word

Living in a cramped and noisy shelter is a tough experience. Many pups begin to act out, hoping for the day when a caring person will notice their plight and offer them a warm, loving home.

While Romeo was fortunate, numerous animals are still in conditions similar to his former situation.

Please consider opening your home and heart to adopt one of these precious pups. They truly deserve it!
