Dog Repeatedly Escapes Through Broken Fence, Owner Chooses to Surrender Her

Date:

Throughout my years of volunteering at shelters and writing about canine companions, I have encountered numerous ridiculous excuses for abandoning dogs. Each time, I’m taken aback at how anyone could rationalize such actions.

The tale of a sweet little dog named Sadie brings yet another absurd reason to my attention—a broken backyard fence. Yes, you read that correctly… just a fence.

Many people adopt pets without truly grasping the responsibilities involved, only to discard them at the first sign of trouble.

It’s as though they see their pets as mere belongings rather than living, breathing friends.

This is Sadie’s story, which fortunately has a joyful conclusion, thanks to the wonderful individuals who genuinely care about animals.

Adorable Dog Named Sadie

At just two years old, Sadie found herself at a shelter because her owners decided they no longer wanted to care for her.

“Sadie’s owners didn’t want to fix their backyard fence, so Sadie kept escaping. Instead of addressing the issue, they opted to surrender her,” shared Madeline Bracken, a volunteer at the Glenn Heights Animal Shelter in Texas, with Newsweek.

After nearly two years with her previous family, Sadie was handed over to the shelter solely because they didn’t want to properly maintain their backyard fence to keep a small dog like her secure.

The owners labeled Sadie as an Alaskan Husky and Border Collie mix, but her petite size led the shelter to suspect she may actually be a mix of Husky and Corgi instead.

When it comes to Huskies, they’re practically escape artists. They’re known for leaping fences or digging their way out, yet a responsible owner should recognize this and find solutions.

Monica Salmeron, the animal control officer at the shelter, even suggested some simple and low-cost ways to repair their fence, but the owners were uninterested.

Sadie was devastated, frightened, and having a hard time adjusting to life in the shelter.

“Sadie doesn’t want to be there. It’s noisy with all the barking, and she’s isolated 90 percent of the time, which really shows that she’s a family dog at heart,” Bracken noted.

She craved affection and is exceptionally gentle, making this experience all the more challenging for her. This sweet girl yearned for a family that would love her back as she loved them.

Although numerous individuals expressed interest in adopting her, unfortunately, nothing materialized.

Driven by Sadie’s touching story, Bracken took action by creating a video highlighting this lovely dog in search of her forever family.

A New Forever Home

The video quickly gained traction, providing Sadie with renewed hope of finding the perfect match.

“She is a sweet cuddle bug who walks well on a leash, loves people, and interacts positively with other dogs. She is also house-trained, spayed, and ready for adoption,” Bracken shared in the video.

She further mentioned that Sadie underwent temperament testing and passed with flying colors.

@thetrashytexan MEET SADIE! She came into the animal shelter because her owner didn’t want to maintain their backyard to the level necessary to prevent a small dog from escaping. We were told she is an Alaskan Husky and Collie mix BUT this girl is LITTLE! We are guessing she’s more of a husky/CORGI mix! Almost 2 years old. Need updated rabies vaccine. She is fixed. Good with kids. Good with other dogs. #AdoptDontShop #adoptdontshop🐾 #DogShelter ♬ original sound – TheTrashyTexan 🗑♻️🌍

“She loves to snuggle in your lap, even though she’s on the larger side for a small dog, and enjoys following people around when she gets the chance to be out,” Bracken added.

Sadie deserved a miracle, and she finally received one!

After the video made waves on TikTok and an article was published by Newsweek, the Glenn Heights Animal Shelter in Texas received over 81 inquiries about Sadie.

By the end of the day, Sadie had already found her new forever home.

Here’s hoping Sadie never faces such heartache again and that her new family can mend her fragile heart because this sweet girl truly deserves all the love in the world!
