16-Year-Old Dog Experiences Heartbreak After Being Surrendered to Shelter by Owners

Date:

Numerous senior dogs find themselves in shelters during their twilight years, deemed “unwanted” by their previous families.

As health challenges become more prevalent, some owners choose to rehome their pets, leading to heartbreak for these loving companions.

At the age of 16, Link was left abandoned, discarded by his family at a shelter. His sorrowful whimpers moved many, but one individual stepped forward to transform his fate!

A Fresh Beginning

Carlie Cahill from Oklahoma spotted Link’s photo online and instantly felt a connection. Despite his many health challenges, Carlie rushed to apply and welcomed the affectionate dog into her home.

Upon their first meeting, Link was devoid of fur and battling multiple significant infections.

“When I picked him up from the shelter, he had mange, fleas, and a yeast infection. I later discovered he had severe allergies and had suffered from bacterial infections as well,” Carlie shared on Instagram.

Initially, Link was timid and wary, needing to adjust to Carlie’s home. His abandonment left him stressed, and he required time to begin trusting people again.

Link received tremendous support from his new family, particularly from his canine sibling, Toad. Toad embraced him instantly, almost treating him like a little brother, offering comfort whenever Link felt overwhelmed.

“Whenever Link would sit and whine or scratch, Toad would be right beside him, sniffing and nudging,” Carlie recounted to GeoBeats Animals.

Within just a few days, the two formed a brotherly bond, and Link began to exhibit joyful behavior like a completely transformed pup. He even claimed a special sleeping area in the house – Toad’s crate!

“Link adores getting cozy in Toad’s spacious crate,” Carlie mentioned on Instagram.

In less than two years of living with Carlie, Link underwent a remarkable transformation. He became a fluffy bundle of joy who treasured every moment of his new life.

The duo enjoys walks together, snuggling on the couch, and napping side by side. Their size difference doesn’t matter; they complement each other perfectly, leaving everyone they encounter in awe of their beautiful bond!

It’s evident that the 18-year-old boy is thriving in his little corner of Oklahoma. Although he has a cataract in one eye that affects his vision, Link remains the happiest boy around!

Carlie is still uncertain about his breed. Many have speculated he might have some Chihuahua in him; however, his affinity for rain sets him apart from her previous Chihuahuas, indicating he might belong to a different breed.

But at this stage, it no longer matters, as Carlie’s only priority is to ensure Link enjoys a memorable and fulfilling final chapter of his life!

“I feel fortunate to have found him, allowing me to care for him and ensure he experiences love in the twilight of his life,” expresses Carlie.

Together with Toad, the trio shares incredible moments, creating lasting memories and embarking on daily adventures.

Transitioning from a sorrowful pup mourning the loss of his family, Link now enjoys the blessings of having a family that will be with him forever!
